Thanksgiving Wednesday

"I want you woven into a tapestry of love, in touch with everything there is to know of God. Then you will have minds confident and at rest, focused on Christ, God's great mystery. All the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery and nowhere else." Colossians 2:2-4 The Message

I love that phrase "woven into a tapestry of love." It reminds me so much of the quilts my grandmothers used to make. My grandmothers lived right around the corner from each other - there was only one house in between their houses. In that middle house also lived a widow and she left her quilting frame set up in her living room 24/7. My grandmothers would go to her house and the three would sew tiny scraps of cloth onto a large piece of material, until those tiny scraps were woven into a beautiful tapestry. As a child, I loved to go with them. They would allow me to sift through all the small pieces of cloth, picking out the ones I thought were pretty. And, when I wasn't looking they would replace the ones I selected that didn't match the others, with pieces that did. I have one of those quilts today, rich in shades of ruby red, blues of the sky and ocean, greens of grass and trees against a background of warm white.

The apostle Paul was not talking about quilts when he expressed his desire to see the Colossians "woven into a tapestry of love." Yet, I can see the similiarities. Each of us are different - different personalities, characteristics just as those scraps of material are different sizes and different colors. Yet, when God begins to "piece" us together - just like the quilt - we beome a beautiful tapestry of His love.

Today, I am thankful for His love. And I am thankful for being woven into a tapestry of love that puts me "in touch of everything there is to know of God."
